Dear Member,

We enjoyed a fantastic turnout at our panel discussion and networking event at Lincoln University earlier this month and look forward to welcoming you to our Auckland in-person event on 6 May. It's an incredible chance to learn from members ProCare, Foodstuffs, FMG and Fonterra on their wellbeing and community impact programmes that span so many sectors!

We know it's a turbulent time for businesses navigating escalation by our two largest trading partners in a previously rules-based trade system. If US tariffs affect you, or you think they may affect you, check out MFAT's tariff finder for the latest and stay up to date by registering for MFAT's Market Intelligence Reports.

Finally, Inland Revenue is reviewing how Fringe Benefit Tax (FBT) works, and the proposed changes could have real implications for co-ops - especially those that provide vehicles, small staff perks (including applying FBT to benefits gifted by suppliers or that cost the organisation nothing) or host events. Review the proposed changes here, and get in touch if you would like us to add our voice to your submission.

I look forward to collaborating with you all this year. If I can be of any help, please reach out.

Ngā mihi / In co-operation

ADVOCACY AND IYC 2025

Advocacy: Submissions made on IRD taxation and the not-for-profit sector and MBIE's Government Procurement Rules (v5)

We made a submission to IRD in support of retention of existing tax exemptions for credit unions and friendly societies, and co-signed the BusinessNZ letter to Ministers strongly opposing any changes. Our submission on Procurement Rules advocated for MBIE to go further in recognising how business structure and ownership impact economic outcomes. Plus, we recommended direct reference to cooperative and mutual enterprises in the Rules to ensure they are visible and understood by procurement practitioners. We noted procurement is a strategic tool, and cooperative businesses are well positioned to help the Government meet its economic, social, and environmental goals.
